A poet returns to a snowbound Turkish town and finds it gripped by political violence, religious tension, and a string of suicides among young women. Pamuk writes about the border between East and West, between faith and secularism, between the self and the state — and he does so with a novelist's compassion rather than a polemicist's certainty.
